Summer season is great for whale watching, as the wildlife in the bay is at its highest peak.
This is the time when the minke whales are at their most abundant, along with the white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and humpback whales, giving us the chance to enjoy and understand them in their natural environment.
"Elding is far and away the best Whale-Watch operator in Reykjavík. Outstanding naturalist guides, very friendly and professional staff, comfortable and stable boats and Marine Biologists working on board... Brilliant!" says Mark Carwardine, one of the world's most celebrated whale and dolphin experts.
We know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the oceans and its inhabitants. Whales in particular have changed lives with their mysterious and complex behaviours and curiosity. Iceland provides some of the best whale watching in the world as more than 20 species have been recorded in Icelandic waters, coming here to feed on the abundant of food available to them in the summer months.
Conveniently located in Reykjavík's old harbour, a few hour tour with Elding can bring you up close to whales and birds in their natural habitat all year round. The drama, joy and poetry of these beautiful whales are seen on around 95% of our tours in the summer and 80% in the winter. Our whale watching tours are wildlife excursions and therefore each tour is unique. Tourists delight in the sightings of minke and humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and various sea birds such as puffins, gannets, guillemots, gulls, kittiwakes, arctic terns and many more depending on the season. The whales often surface within a few meters from our boats due to our strict observation of IceWhale's codes of conduct for responsible whale watching. To ensure that the animals are not disturbed by our presence, we sail at a constant speed towards their habitat. This also is part of our sustainability policy we try to minimize oil use and pollution.
Safety and comfort are always top priorities for us. During the tour expert guides inform and educate passengers about safety precautions, surroundings and the wildlife on the bay. All our boats are equipped with restrooms, onboard café and safety equipment. During the tour passengers can enjoy light refreshments, sit down in our indoor saloon or enjoy the view on great viewing platforms. A mini-wildlife library is open during the tour and the younger generation is encouraged to express their artistic view of the wild life on the bay. To make the trip even more comfortable we provide warm, floatable overalls, raincoats and/or blankets for our passengers during the tour.
What do I need to bring
- Sturdy footwear
- Warm clothing (thermals, hat, scarf and gloves)
It is always colder on the water than on land so wear good sturdy shoes, dress warmly and put on the provided warm overalls when needed.
For optimal viewing and a more enjoyable cruise this tour is weather dependent.
We abide by a Code of Conduct
for responsible whale watching. Thus each encounter is on the animals terms and distance may be kept to minimise disturbance.
